Section 1: Getting Started at a Broker-Dealer

In this Section you will get familiar with your working environment and the procedural aspects of being a General Securities Representative (registered representative).

You'll obtain the knowledge of standards and required approvals of public communications, the factors that affect securities markets to evaluate investment opportunities for your clients. You will also get familiar with the process that form the framework of oversight for your business activities.

Section 2: All About Accounts – Opening, Maintaining, and Client Suitability

This section will explore your critical job functions, starting with the different account types available, and the authorizations needed to open a new account. The lessons that follow will discuss who gets to manage an account, who supervises account activity, and how to transfer securities to and from accounts.

We will introduce the key concept of the client investment profile, and dive int the all-important matter of customer suitability - which will always be your overriding priority.

Section 3: Equity Securities, Derivatives, Partnerships, and Real Estate

In the Section 3 we will build upon the things you`ve already learned about equities, options, REITs, and Partnerships as security types. While prior exams like SIE mainly want to introduce terms and topics to you and just have you memorize them.

Here in the Series 7 it`s time to go more in depth - because at the end of the day it`s all about being able to recommend the right securities to your clients.

Section 4: Fixed Income Securities - All About That Debt

Here in Section 4 we explore the ins and outs of fixed income securities, including bonds, corporate bonds, municipal bonds, and money markets. There are lots of flavors of fixed income, each with their own particular blend of risks and rewards.

We'll also introduce you to the calculations for different types of yields, how to incorporate taxes into the equations and how a customer`s cost basis for bonds can change over time due to accreation. We`ll dive into the math for convertible issues and accrued interest situations.

Section 5: Packaged Securities and Managed Investments

In Section 5 we follow up on our lessons on Debt and Equities to move on into more complex products. We will discuss package products securities, managed investments, retirement accounts and variable annuities. Who they may be suitable for and possible tax implications of each.

These special types of investments can offer level of diversification and risk mitigation that may suit certain clients of yours.

Section 6: Trading Markets

Building on our knowledge of securities issues and different instruments that are available - it only makes sense in Section 6 to now dedicate time to discuss where these securities originate from and where they are traded.

We will focus on the Primary and the Secondary markets. We will help you to understand how companies issue stock through IPO and learn about the exemptions to the strict registration requirements that exist.

Section 7: Processing Trades, Key Tax Issues, and Margin Calculations

Here in Section 7 we are going to give you a run down to procedures for executing purchases and sales in the Secondary market. These modules bring together all the knowledge you have been learning.

We will draw on your existing base of knowledge of your client, suitability of securities, and different trading markets operations in order to learn the detail aspects of dealing in the Secondary Market. And finally to learn how to apply Margin Calculations.

About the Series 7 General Rep Exam

The Series 7 Exam is written and administered by The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Passing this exam qualifies you to engage in trading corporate securities other than commodities and futures as an entry-level General Securities Representatives.

What is the Series 7 Exam and what will it do?

The Series 7 exam seeks to measure the degree to which each candidate possesses the knowledge and abilities needed to perform the critical functions of a General Securities Registered Representative. Effective October 1, 2018, in order to obtain registration as a General Securities Representative, candidates must pass both the Series 7 exam and a general knowledge co-requisite, the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam.

What is the Testing Format of the Series 7 Exam?

The Series 7 exam, also known as the General Securities Representative Exam (GSRE) consists of 125 multiple-choice questions and is a total duration of 360 minutes. The minimum passing score is 72%.

If I register for my Series 7 exam before October 1, what exam(s) will I have take?

Individuals who apply for registration on or before September 30 will take their exam under the current program, even if exam appointment date is on or after October 1 (you will be given a 120-day window to take that exam).
